ANALYSIS OF A COMIC DRAMA ENTITLED “THE LESSON”

This explanation deals with structural elements in “THE LESSON”. The structural elements generally consist of:
1. Character and Characterization
There are two kinds of character, namely major character and minor character. Meanwhile, characterization is development of character within a particular work. It represents the qualities of the characters physically, mentally and socially. There are as follows.
a. Major character
1. Professor
· 50 to 60 years old.
· He is an aggressive person
· Cleverer person than others
· Polite, very timid, his voice deadened by his timidity.
2. Pupil
· 18 years old
· Innocent
· Polite
· Good listener
· From rich person
· Attractive and self confidence
· Foolish person
b. Minor character
1. The Maid
· 45 to 50 years old
· Polite
· Patient
· Stout
· Care with the others
2. Setting
Setting of a literary work consists of two broader setting. Firstly, setting of time. Secondly, is setting of place.
a. Setting of time
Lesson situation between the professor and his pupil.
b. Setting of place
Mostly, setting of place happened in professor’s room, especially in the dining room.
3. Plot
In the beginning, the young pupil learns to the professor and looks like dominate the conversation by her confidence and attractive. In the climax happened when the lesson progresses, pupil is getting meek and vulnerable. The professor starts to angry. The maid warns him in many times about his health and his calamity. He tends to ignore it without many considerations. In the end, the professor kills the pupil with an imaginative knife and with the help of his maid he could get rid of her corpse. Then the story is continued again with another young pupil who is ready for the lesson.
4. Point of View
It is way the author tells the readers about his story by using narrators. In “The Lesson” as a comic drama using the third person. Narrator is not mentioned directly, only telling the story.
5. Style
a. Grammatical structure
Grammatical structure is informal both in narration and dialogue the point of his style and using the easy word. So it is easy to get understanding.
b. Sentence construction
The sentence construction in “the lesson” tends to be long and short sentence. The author usually uses language sentence construction in narration, when he describes some detailed information.
c. Diction
The choice of words are easy to understand. Mostly used as dialogues form.
6. Theme
The author does not state the theme explicitly. He just gives some clues, so the readers have to comprehend and predict through the whole of story to get the message.
The theme is uncontrolled emotion caused the bad effect to the others.
Conclusion
1. Kind of Drama
The kind of drama can be related to “man versus society”. This reason is based on the story told about human and society especially in conflict arises between professor and his pupil generally. The professor with his unstable killed his pupil.
2. Message
As man in the society, to control emotion as well as possible wherever and whenever in life.
